Rhythm
disorders which cause sudden death following
a heart attack were targeted first with
ablation then with development of implantable
defibrillators
In
the early 1980’s, nearly simultaneously
with the development of catheter based
treatment of heart rhythm disorders, self
contained devices were developed to address
the problem of sudden death occurring
due to cardiac arrest in otherwise stable
patients. Implantable defibrillators are
pacemaker like devices which automatically
detect the onset of deadly heart rhythm
irregularities and treat them with a timely
electric shock to the heart
